But in "American Masters: Pearl Jam Twenty," airing Friday, Oct. 21, on PBS -- as part of the first PBS Arts Fall Festival (check local listings) -- Documentary film director and music journalist originally from Cameroon to do two hours 40 minutes and then there is marked - since all the founding members of Pearl Jam continue alive and free.

Crowe says, "People used to say, about some of the stories that I wrote for Rolling Stone, they would say, 'Why don't you write about Iggy Pop? Why don't you write about Stiv Bators?' And I'd be like, 'Well, let the Stiv Bators story be written by somebody who's invested in that music.'

"But still, that was the challenge, to do a movie about a band that wasn't that, and did survive. That's why there are leaps we had to take, years where literally they're just surviving and playing concerts. So that became part of the story."

And this story, the tragedy is also the first Pearl Jam was formed.

Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were band member who also in another Seattle band in the '80s, called Mother Love Bone, alongside charismatic frontman Andrew Wood.

Sadly, at 24, Wood died following a heroin overdose.

As to whether the film is, in a way, Wood's story, Crowe says, "It is kind of that. When we started, that was one of the things that I really thought about. His story needed to be told, and from that, I thought the whole Pearl Jam tale should come, as it did in life."

By film's end, there is, here is even footage of Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder performing one of Wood's songs.

Crowe says, "I did an interview with them early on, where Eddie wouldn't tell me what song it was that he would sing, at some point, of Wood's. So when I heard that he played 'Crown of Thorns' at the concert, I said, 'Fantastic, I've got to get a recording.' "

Strangely enough, a "Behind the Music" is a tragedy that a Pearl Jam documentary that attracted me to lack.

He says, "If we had the movie where somebody does die at the 40-minute mark, we wouldn't be here. I wouldn't have done it; you wouldn't be talking to me. Just another one of those films … .

"I always get the feeling that, if civilization disappears for a while, and all this stuff that exists now goes into a time capsule, somebody comes along later, goes, 'Oh, rock music, it was made by people that die young.' "

Speaking to Rolling Stone, bassist Jeff Ament said that the grunge veterans hace made on their 10th studio LP, a "great, great start".

The band with longtime producer Brendan O'Brien have been recording the album, although they native of Seattle compared to normal, but Los Angeles is working on content - something Ament said has helped them work efficiently.

Ament commented:

We made the bulk of our records in Seattle, so it's just great to get out of Seattle for me. Everybody leaves all their stuff at home and you just go down for 12 days and it's all you do.

He added that the band hit the studio has added a trigger in time when they're promoting their new documentary Pearl Jam Twenty and accompanying book.

Ament remarked, "It's been really important for us that in the middle of all this, we got together and recorded a bunch of songs. It sort of gave us a breath to go, 'OK, we can go back and get ready for the show and book and movie and all that stuff'".

Pearl Jam band are recording for his 10th studio album is underway earlier than anticipated, according to the RollingStone.com.

The frontman Eddie Vedder with a Los Angeles studio where the band has been mentioned is the work involved in the project site "coming together faster than the band expected."

Vedder remarked at the beginning of the interview, "I don't want to jinx it, but it's on!"

New Details On Pearl Jam Re-Releases

About the forthcoming re-release of their early hit records Vs. and Vitalogy,Pearl Jam has revealed a few new details.

Kelly Curtis,band manager while speaking to Rolling Stones unveil that they will issue both albums separately and also bundled in a three-disc collection.

"When we put out the Ten box-set a few years ago we had enough content to justify the cost of a box-set," Curtis explained. "We didn't have enough content this time, so we put the two albums together so there's value for the fans."

Previously unreleased track titled "Creedy Stomp," of Vs. will be included in the new edition along with several other rare gems. Bassist Jeff Ament says that the outtakes come out of a fertile time for the band.

"The first two weeks we were making Vs. we were pretty cranked up and we were writing music faster than Ed could write lyrics," Ament told Rolling Stone. "That was a pretty solid piece of music that Ed didn't get to. Mike McCready came up with the riff. It's a powerhouse song that showcases Dave Abbruzzese on drums quite a bit."

Last week's top dog, Rihanna's "Loud" (3,600) slipped to No. 3, while Portland’s the Decemberists had the second best premiere of the week with their sixth album, "The King is Dead," at No. 4.

The Black Eyed Peas' "The Beginning" began to slip, dropping two levels to No. 5, The Script's "Science & Faith" checked in at No. 6, and DeadMau5's "4X4=12" shot up seven notches to No. 7.

An autographed guitar has been auctioned off by Pearl Jam for the Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation.

On 24 Oct after a car accident in Seattle Kotowicz passed away, he was cited as "A loved and respected member of the Seattle arts community," in the auction listing at Charitybuzz.com. Kotowicz worked as Vice President of Sales and Director of Marketing at Seattle's Sub Pop records.

The highest bid on the item was $$5,250. All funds will be provided to the Andy Kotowicz Family Foundation will go to Kotowicz's surviving family members.

Kotowicz is survived by his wife and 3-year-old daughter. His daughter was pulled from the fiery crash that took her father by a good Samaritan that arrived early on the scene.

American rock band Pearl Jam, to commemorate its 20th anniversary announced through the band's website on November 4 the release date for Live on Ten Legs, a new live compilation.

On January 17th the album will going to be release officially(except in North America, where it releases January 18). The album includes 18 track which is a mixture of live tracks recorded over the course of the band's 2003-2010 world tours.'Live on Two Legs' was the band last live set released on 1998 and has been certified platinum in the US.

Album tracks include "Animal," "Rearview Mirror," "Jeremy," "Just Breathe," "Alive," and "I Am Mine."

The Alive hitmakers were performing at the Optimus Alive festival in Lisbon earlier this month when frontman Vedder left devotees shocked and confused after announcing the band was going on an indefinite hiatus without giving any further explanation.

US publicist Pearl Jam has denied rumours that the band are about to go on hiatus.
As previously reported, local press in Portugal reported earlier this month that frontman Eddie Vedder had told the audience at the Optimus Alive festival in Lisbon earlier this month: "Thank you for coming to our last show; not our last ever, but our last in a long time".
However, Nicole Vandenberg, head of Vandenberg Communications, told Seattle Weekly: "He says that at the end of all tours, because the tour has ended. The remark may have gotten a little lost in translation".
This doesn't change the fact that Pearl Jam actually should go on hiatus.

Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder says the popular grunge act have played their last show for a "long time".
The rockers, who toured New Zealand late last year, were performing at the Optimus Alive festival in Lisbon when Vedder made the announcement, NME reported.
Near the beginning of their set, Vedder read from a sheet of paper in Portugese and said the band would be going on hiatus, the website for the British music magazine said.
"Thank you for coming to our last show," he told the crowd. "Not our last ever, but our last in a long time."
No Pearl Jam tours have been scheduled for the rest of 2010 or 2011, and the band's drummer Matt Cameron is rejoining Soundgarden for their upcoming reunion shows.
Pearl Jam released their last album, Backspacer, was released in 2009.

Last night, at Berlin’s Kindl Bühne Wuhlheide Pearl Jam performed. The members of R.E.M. are recently in Berlin working on a new record and attended performance of the Pearl Jam’s . Near the end of Pearl Jam’s set, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and R.E.M. sideman Scott McCaughey emerged for a cover of the MC5’s “Kick Out The Jams.”
In Berlin of their time, the members of R.E.M. said, “a city where we have always enjoyed whistle stopping through, and now we’re here long enough to work on R.E.M.‘s next record. Berlin is a pulsing, exciting city with so many varied and distinctive neighborhoods, iconic history all around, great food at all levels and from every corner of the world . . . an excellent place to set up camp and make a great record. Work continues apace with Jacknife Lee and his ace team of Sam Bell and Tom McFall, and while I will not report on the sound or the dimension of the recordings so far, to my ears it all sounds like quite a wonderful set of songs.”

A Pearl Jam song called "Better Days" leaked onto the Interwebs last week, allegedly hacked from what was supposed to be the secure site of PJ's label, Monkeywrench Records. The song circulated virally across the web, along with speculation about what sessions the song is from and what is was intended for. The song was meant to be exchanged between the band's manager and someone else when it was hacked. Someone probably got fired over this breach of security, but nevertheless, check out the lilting, pretty song here.

Entertainment Weekly reports exclusively that song is meant for the Eat Pray Love soundtrack. Eat Pray Love is an upcoming Julia Roberts romantic, "find yourself" movie, which is due out this summer.

EW> pointed out that seven million people bought the book on which the film is based and that PJ singer Eddie Vedder, who is really showing his contemplative and gentle side here, is friends with Javier Bardem, who stars in the film. So perhaps this news is both smart and true, since a lot of people are expected to see the film and since there is a friendship at the heart of the possible collaboration.

Pearl Jam and Kasabian join The Who onstage in London for 'Quadrophenia' show

The Who were joined onstage by very special guests when performed their rock opera album 'Quadrophenia' in its entirety in London last night (March 29).

The band were assisted by Kasabian's Tom Meighan and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder during the gig in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust gig at the Royal Albert Hall.

The performance was the first time remaining original members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend had played the album live since their 1990s 'Quadrophenia' tour. Frontman Daltrey had previously told that it would be the last time they play the 1973 album.

Taking to the stage at 9pm (GMT) after support group Sweet Billy Pilgrim, the duo were joined by Zak Starkey on drums, Simon Townshend on guitar and Pino Palladino on bass.

Flashing visuals of the band, scenes from the '60s and seascapes were shown on the screen behind the stage plus snippets of a revamped version of the 'Quadrophenia' film, complete with a Phil Daniels look-alike actor playing Jimmy for second song and mod anthem 'The Real Me'.

Pearl Jam frontman Vedder then joined the band to duet on 'The Punk And The Godfather'. Later he returned to help the band perform 'I've Had Enough'. Kasabian's Tom Meighan came on stage later during the song to add further vocals. Meighan was wearing a silver mod suit in a nod to the Ace Face character played by Sting in the film adaptation of Quadrophenia.

Townshend brought out a few of his signature windmill moves later on, while Vedder and Meighan returned for the second verse of 'Sea And Sand'.

Townshend' played 'Drowned' acoustically while Daltrey returned to the stage to begin 'Bell Boy', with Meighan appearing at the back of the stage after the first verse to sing the late Keith Moon's vocal parts.

Having refrained from any onstage banter throughout the gig, the band were then rejoined by their guest vocalists for one last time as they shook hands with the musicians, Townsend thanking the performers.

The most popular American rock band of the nineties come to the UK in 2010 to headline Hard Rock Calling.

Seattle’s own Pearl Jam will rock the stage on the opening night of the much-anticipated three-day concert festival. Earlier this year, the sold-out Hard Rock Calling festival featured stellar performances by headliners Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, Neil Young and The Killers, supported by more than a dozen top acts, such as Dave Mathews Band, The Pretenders, The Gaslight Anthem and more.

Pearl Jam are premiering a new short documentary on the making of their new album 'Backspacer' online now (watch a clip from it on the right).

Eddie Vedder and co have created a 10-minute film in which they are seen performing three new tracks from their forthcoming album, due out in the US on September 20 and a day later in the UK.

The video, which debuts today (August 17) on MySpace Music, sees the band performing 'Just Breathe', 'Got Some' and the album's lead single 'The Fixer'.

It also shows the band in the studio and wandering around their native Seattle.

Vedder discusses songwriting process, saying it was like "capturing lightning in a bottle… (the songs) were easy to write, lucky for me they were evocative of something right away".

Pearl Jam were joined onstage by The Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood as they made their UK live comeback at London's O2 Shepherds Bush Empire last night (August 11).

Playing in front of fanclub members who packed the venue, the Seattle band saw early tracks like 'Why Go' and 'Dissident' rapturously received by the crowd, while poppy new single 'The Fixer', from their forthcoming album, 'Backspacer', also drew loud applause.

Frontman Eddie Vedder was in humorous form throughout the show, asking the crowd about the episode of reality TV show 'Big Brother' he'd watched in his hotel the night before.

"It was just some people sleeping," he puzzled. "Do you know that show? I couldn't bear the tension."

Early in the set, Vedder introduced Wood onstage, who then led the band through a bluesy version of Bob Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower', during which he traded licks with guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard.

Pearl Jam later played a lengthy version of 'Even Flow' and their 1991 debut single 'Alive', which provoked a mass sing-a-long from the capacity crowd.

The band returned for two encores, which included a solo spot from Vedder for new song 'The End'. And the band also played another classic cover - The Who's 'The Real Me' - with help on guitar from Pete Townshend's brother Simon, who is also a member of The Who's touring band.

At the end of their two-and-a-half hour set the band then took a collective bow as a humbled Vedder thanked the crowd for their support throughout the years.

Pearl Jam treated fans to a bonus set of covers and rare songs at their Molson Amphitheatre gig in Toronto on Friday (August 21).

The band chose to effectively support themselves after their scheduled opening act, Ted Leo, got delayed at the border. Rather than leave fans waiting, Pearl Jam played a set of covers and jams before their normal headline appearance, reports Chartattack.com.

Despite the venue not being full when they started playing, Eddie Vedder performed solo covers of Neil Young's 'Sugar Mountain' and 'The Needle And The Damage Done', before rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard played a version of Johnny Thunders' 'You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory'.

Lead guitarist Mike McCready also played several of his own songs, before Vedder returned to the stage to play Pearl Jam rarity 'Bee Girl'.

ROCK star cameos can still put Sydney to silence. Even after playing hostess to everyone whos anyone, when marquee acts collide, we are impressed.
So when Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder sauntered on to the stage of a North Sydney theatre to join his mate Ben Harper (pictured above with Vedder), a frisson of excitement rippled through the room. Vedder was on a surfing holiday and Harper had just played the 2001 East Coast Blues And Roots festival. They performed Indifference and the crowd went nuts. Harper says his friendship with Pearl Jam is a long one.

"I have known the Pearl Jam guys since I first met Jeff [Ament] when he was coming to my shows in 1994; so I’ve known these guys for a long, long time," Harper says.
But they have shared more than a few drinks backstage. They have rallied for the same causes and surfed the same waves.
So no one could be surprised that Harper’s new band Relentless7 would be invited to join Pearl Jam — and Liam Finn — on their Australian stadium tour.
At the very least, you know touring with friends is going to get you a decent rider, lights and sound. Then it’s up to you to try to blow the headline act out of the park.
Harper lets a huge laugh rip when asked if it gets competitive out there.
"Listen man, it’s not sports and I refuse to approach it as such," he says.
"Liam and Eliza Jane [Barnes], myself and Pearl Jam, we all want to go out there and set fire to some s..., we do. But no one on Earth, not one band — except maybe Zeppelin — can come on after Pearl Jam, end of story. It’s not about competitiveness. They are Pearl Jam and they are an absolute force of nature. Hail, hail, hail Pearl Jam."
Harper, who has surfed his fair share of Australian and Californian waves, won’t even take Vedder on in the ocean.
"My dear, you don’t seem to understand what I am getting at. I don’t have a chance. I will wax his board, I will get out there and set it up for him. I love to surf but Eddie, he was born to do it, man."
So is there anything Harper can do better than Vedder? He isn’t saying so but a legion of Australian fans would back the Relentless7 frontman if the pair were to guitar duel. And, as evidenced by current photos, Harper is getting some serious air on stage during his gigs.
“Yes, I am. I am able to utilise my skateboard skills on stage," Harper says.
“Matter of fact, after the Austin City Limits festival, Perry Farrell [Jane’s Addiction] came up and asked, ‘How do you get that much air? Do you jump off the drum riser?’. Nah, that’s cheating. I’ve got hops and the music, it’s the thing that is gettting me lifted."
When he’s not leaping like he’s Michael Jordan, Harper is sitting down with the lap steel. He cracks up when asked why the quality of chairs he has on stage with Relentless7 are of the school-hall fold-up variety rather than something more suitable for a rock’n’roller.
"You are killing me! Yeah, you’re right, in the past I have brought out actually fancy chairs on tour and they got smashed. And then I used to have a blanket over them so you couldn’t see ... damn it, you are calling me out on the chairs. I can see it now: ‘He’s got some nice guitars but he’s a tightwad when it comes to his chairs’."
In the end, neither the chairs nor the competition matter because Relentless7 are already on top of their game.
"I am turning 40 this year and taking it on the chin. Pearl Jam have the best fans in the world so I am stoked they picked us to come to Australia. And right now, it is on with Relentless7, it is on fire," Harper says.

Dig Deep Into Catalog in Philly to Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam's at the start of four night stand at the Philadelphia Spectrum -- at the historic arena ever the last concert, which is destined for demolition -- the singer pledged to the audience, "By Saturday night we're gonna try to play every song we know."
So where was "Dirty Frank," the Ten B side about the band's cannibalistic bus driver? Or "Soon Forget," the anti capitalist ukelele screed from Binaural? Or "Driftin'," an acoustic number they released as a 1999 holiday single to fan club members? They've played it in concert a whopping four times; surely they must still know it, right?
But what the four epic Philly shows couldn't deliver for absolute completists, they more than made up for in obscurity and all around weirdness. The Internet was brimming with speculation of a Philly style Last Waltz for the Spectrum, with everyone from Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel (both of whom played the arena more than a dozen times) to Dave Matthews and Jon Bon Jovi rumored to show up.
None of them did, but Saturday's three-and-a-half-hour Halloween set did include oddities -- from a roadie dressed in full body rat costume for "Rats," to a boxing-ring girl giving periodic World Series updates (while the Phillies were winning, anyway), to "Sweet Lew," a never-before-played live homage to Kareem Abdul Jabbar, with Vedder dribbling a basketball into a mic.
And that's not even counting when the band came out in full Devo attire for a complete, enthusiastic rendition of "Whip It." Red bucket hats included.
This was a show for the devotees. Witness "Out of My Mind," an improv played just twice in 1994, reprised here for a fan who promised a significant sum for charity if they would perform it. Or the obscure Vitalogy throwaway track "Bugs," never played live before, a musical curiosity that features Vedder talking about joining the world of insects while he accompanies himself on the accordion. The Last Waltz, this ain't; more like The Last Polka.
It might not have been what the assembled faithful were expecting, but they ate it all up anyway.
Whether blasting through their greatest hits ("Jeremy," "Alive," "Evenflow") or 20 year old rarities ("Crown of Thorns," by Pearl Jam precursor Mother Love Bone), this band knows as well as anyone how to rile up its audience. Vedder lets them sing on "Better Man" and "Corduroy," while "Spin the Black Circle" and "Do the Evolution" he keeps for himself. Even a brand new song like the anthemic "Amongst the Waves" -- on Pearl Jam's latest album, out just a few weeks -- had the crowd fist pumping the air like the band was winning them the World Series. (Someone in South Philadelphia had to; it surely wasn't happening across the street at Citizens Bank Park, where the Phillies were losing Game 3 to the Yankees.)
By the end of the night, with the house lights up and the band tearing through Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World," Vedder was tossing out to the fans a seemingly endless supply of tambourines, like he was hosting the world's loudest bar mitzvah.
As the Spectrum's final chords rang out (for the record, they came in the form of "Yellow Ledbetter"), and confetti and balloons blanketed the arena for the last time (hey, at least no one had to clean it all up, right?), it was clear that, through the saving grace of rock'n'roll, all lies were forgiven.

Pearl Jam: Pearl Jam opens final stand at Spectrum

Pearl Jam just before took the stage of the Spectrum on Tuesday night for the first of four gigs that will bring the arena's days to an end, the band treated the crowd to a highlight reel from the venerable venue's past.
Footage of the Flyers and the 76ers clinching championships was mingled with clips of the Grateful Dead and Bruce Springsteen, who bid the Spectrum farewell with his own four night stand ending last week. The valedictory montage served a dual purpose: It paid tribute to the history of what Springsteen called "one of the last great rock halls," and it inserted the evening's headliners into that history. They wouldn't have evoked the Spectrum's highest highs if they weren't intending to equal them.
Singer Eddie Vedder made it clear that the band intended to create its own slice of history, promising to play "every song we know" over the course of the week's concerts. (After Tuesday's and last night's shows, the band will take a night off before returning for the weekend.) Over 21/2 hours, Pearl Jam made a sizable dent in its repertoire, tackling 30 songs, coming from its 1991 debut, Ten, through Backspacer, released last month.
In keeping with the new album's sparse approach, the band drew heavily on its catalog of taut and frenzied rockers, steering clear, with a few exceptions, of the angsty mid tempo sludge that got it lumped in with the first wave of grunge.
The aptly named "Supersonic" raced forward at a blinding pace, while "The Fixer" emulated the clipped guitars of the band's Seattle compatriots Sleater-Kinney. (Vedder acknowledged the debt by tacking a snippet of their song "Modern Girl" onto the end of "Not for You.")
The band underlined the turn toward stripping down and speeding up by choosing the California quartet Social Distortion to open the first two shows. (Fellow SoCal punks Bad Religion will open the latter two.) Drawing on the blistering energy of early rock and rockabilly, Social Distortion's songs were pushed forward by the brassy growl of singer Mike Ness, who, with his slicked-back hair, bulging neck muscles and copious tattoos, looked as though he might be on work release from a minimum security prison.
Outlaw imagery and the battle against self destruction figured prominently in songs like "Prison Bound" and "Ball and Chain," both from Social Distortion's early 1990s high-water mark, as well as a snarling version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire."
More than five years after its last album (a new one is planned for next year), Ness' band seemed a tad ragged at times, as if its rhythm section had not had enough time to settle into a groove. But the best songs, including the vintage "Mommy's Little Monster," drew an enthusiastic response from a crowd that had quite a few Social Distortion fans.
That response couldn't, of course, compare to the crowd's reaction to the headliners, whose determination to stage a classic rock show was matched by the audience's desire to be part of one. Throwing himself backward or dropping into a squat, Vedder threw his weight against his microphone stand as if it were the only thing keeping him upright. Inevitably, during the set closing "Go," he seemed to lose his balance and tumbled to the stage, but he kept singing, lying flat on his back as though he'd intended to end up there all along.

Grunge supergroup Temple Of The Dog briefly reformed in Los Angeles on Tuesday night (06Oct09) when Pearl Jam onstage to joined Chris Cornell.

The former Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman formed the band in the early 1990s with the musicians that were to become Pearl Jam and they released one album.

The one time bandmates reunited for a song at the Gibson Amphitheatre. It was the first time the original members of Temple of The Dog had performed onstage together since they played two songs during a show in Los Angeles in 2003.

The band will sell “Backspacer” through a network of some 800 independent record stores, while also negotiating to make iTunes the exclusive digital seller of the CD.
Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament said the multi pronged release deal had been in the works since before the band’s 2006 self titled CD, which was released on J Records.
“The jury’s still a little bit out, but it looks like people who want the record are getting the record,” Ament said. “And we’re all sort of indie store guys and we used to go to our neighborhood record stores, and I think all of those people are super glad.”

VANCOUVER — Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder is a man who simply refuses to grow old gracefully. Vedder and his mates left it all on the stage Friday night at GM Place with a live performance that certainly deserves a place among the band's 263 authorized live bootlegs.
From the first clap of bass thunder that rolled around the Garage, Vedder, guitar players Mike McCready and Stone Gossard, bassist Jeff Ament and drummer Matt Cameron held hearts and ears in their hands.
Vedder screamed, spat and hurled himself into a trio of new tunes capped by the band's radio hit The Fixer, which only weeks after its release was already tripping off the tongues of the fist-pumping crowd on the floor.
In fact as Vedder yelled frantically paced rocker after rocker at the crowd, they yelled the words right back at him.
The first break on the violation came 30 minutes in with the classic ballad Given to Fly on which the crowd's boisterous singing at times succeeded in drowning out the band.
In a break between songs, Vedder told the crowd that Lower Mainland icon Terry Fox was an inhalation to him as a child.
Vedder pledged $20,000 to the Terry Fox Foundation, saying that the Marathon of Hope was one of the reasons why his band became community activists.
"He showed you could do something," Vedder said.
Pearl Jam is touring its ninth studio album Backspacer, a tightly wrapped sonic shock compared with the languid worthiness of many of their previous efforts.
The album clocks in at a lean 37 minutes, only two songs breaking the four-minute mark. The change was a conscious one, stemming in part from the band's decision to work with producer Brendan O'Brien, who overhauled Bruce Springsteen's sound on The Rising (2002) and Devils and Dust (2005).
Vocalist Eddie Vedder has largely left politics behind in the band's newer material. Without George W. Bush to kick around fighting the power just isn't that fun anymore.
What is fun is topping the rock charts with Alice in Chains, something that hasn't happened since 1992 at the height of the Seattle grunge explosion. Nirvana's Kurt Cobain became the face of the movement, but Vedder was always its conscience, a mantle he wears even today.
Ben Harper and Relentless7 ripped into their short set promptly at 7:30, long before most fans had been to the T-shirt booth.
The opener's lap guitar driven southern fry up gave way to a hip bluesy rock set, but was nearly discomfited by the muddy sound of an empty room echo. Pearl Jam's longtime opener pressed on to deliver an energy that would make any other headliner nervous.

Pearl Jam transcends on 'Backspacer'

It's been said that Pearl Jam has spent most of the last decade essentially in revolt against fame. That may be true, but following a strong return to form on their 2006 self-titled disc, Pearl Jam continues to surprise with an upbeat and hope-filled collection on "Backspacer."
After getting back to basics with its previous disc, which was filled with the emotional and political angst that the band made its name on, "Backspacer" looks forward with positivity. A change at the top of the U.S. government could have had an effect on Eddie Vedder and his mates, who made no secret of their displeasure on the outgoing administration.
The disc is infused with some postpunk/new wave punch and it works very well behind the guitar flourishes of Stone Gossard and Mike McCready who still work so well off each other and the pulsating bass of Jeff Ament. Matt Cameron remains one of the most dynamic drummers in rock.
On the disc's lead single, "The Fixer," Vedder gives voice to the overall tone of "Backspacer" with shouts of "I wanna fight to get it back again" and "I wanna try to love again."
"Got Some" and "Johnny Guitar" are straightforward, driving rock tracks; "Supersonic" is aggressive yet melodic; and they bring a light touch on the fantastic acoustic rocker "Just Breathe" and the soft disc-closer "The End."
The disc's finest moments come on "Amongst the Waves" and "Unthought Known" both are the kind of soaring rock anthems Pearl Jam is renowned for with solos by Gossard that are nothing short of uplifting.
There are still those who may label them as mere "grunge icons" but Pearl Jam continues to transcend on "Backspacer."

more on intense, three minute garage rock tunes. In the age of epic double albums and never ending streams of bonus tracks, it seems unusual for a rock act to keep it so efficient. That's not to say they took a more casual approach this time around they kept things tight on purpose."We had about 17 to 20 ideas going into this project, and when we had 11 about finished, (producer) Brendan (O'Brien) and (frontman) Ed (Vedder) sat down and said, 'This looks like a really good record,' " guitarist Mike McCready told MTV News. "(Guitarist) Stone (Gossard) had been talking about wanting to have a record that was shorter and more concise, and I think we achieved that." The inspiration to keep the album concise came mostly from their urge to footage the vibe of albums they loved growing up. "It hearkens back to our favorite records," McCready explained. "Aerosmith's Rocks had nine songs; all the old Van Halen albums had eight or nine songs. I'm dating myself, but those are acyually nice records to me, and you don't have to have a lot of stuff on them."So, will those other songs that didn't make the cut get banished to the bottom of the group's B-sides pile? Not quite. In fact, they've got big plans for those too. "We still have other songs that are out there that are from this session that we may do something with in about six months," McCready said.

Pearl Jam was the headliner for Day One of the second annual Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival. Yet, the honest star of the show was the weather.
It was a splendid day by the Bay, as temperatures remained warm well into the evening on Friday. Indeed, some people could even be heard making the unusual complaint that it was just too hot in San Francisco. Thus, the tens of thousands of fans that turned out to Golden Gate Park for the concert never wanted to put on their jackets and sweatshirts, even after the sun went down.
A brilliant sunset was visible as Pearl Jam took the stage to perform a 2-hour-plus closing set that was chock full of fan favorites. Eddie Vedder, although worried by a sore throat, sounded sensible strong as he raced through the grungy classics “Alive,” “Even Flow,” “Daughter” and “Animal.”
The Seattle band’s set was the highlight for most fans, during a day that came off a little too much like “Pearl Jam and a bunch of other acts.” The lineups for the next two days seem much more equilibriumed with the Dave Matthews Band, Jason Mraz and the Black Eyed Peas going on Saturday and Tenacious D, M.I.A. and Modest Mouse taking over on Sunday.
In all, things looked to go pretty smoothly on the opening day of the festival. It surely didn’t appear as crowded as last year’s opener, which drew a capacity crowd to see Radiohead. Official presentences figures weren’t released for Friday, but the event is anticipated to draw some 130,000 over the three days.
Although Pearl Jam dominated the day, there were many other performers that released worthy sets most notably, Silversun Pickups, Tom Jones and Q Tip. Tune into this blog for reports of the happenings on Days Two and Three of Outside Lands.

The biggest classic rock fans of the alternative era, Evanston native Eddie Vedder and his bandmates in Seattle's Pearl Jam have now been faithful rocking arenas long enough to claim that denomination themselves.
On Sept. 20, the band will release its ninth studio album, "Backspacer," and a radical stylistic exit is unlikely. The long difference is the band is going without a major label for the first time, alternately using its Web site as well as iTunes, indie retailers and the Target chain.

Not since its start in 1990 and perhaps during the tense period a few years later when it waged war with Ticketmaster has the five had so much to prove. Perhaps as a result, it was an even more activated Pearl Jam than usual that pulled in to the United Center on Sunday for the first of two sold out nights.
"We've got a lot of emotion to get through tonight," Vedder said at the start. "So let's go through it together."
The group opened with a lovely conception of the droning, folksy "Long Road" before tearing into a rollicking "Corduroy" and a ferocious "Why Go," nicely decorating the contrasting poles of its sound.
"Why go home?" Vedder asked after the latter. "I am home, and it feels f---ing great to be here. Life experiences ... even if you don't live in Chicago [anymore], Chicago will always live in you, and it's nice to come back and see so many people come out for this."
"This" was a two hour jaunt through the Pearl Jam catalog, heavier on the hard rockers than the ballads this time, but as usual mixing signature hits with deep album tracks and, oddly, only a brief taste of the new tunes so much for crass commercialism.
The band did lose the plot a few times, notably during a futilely jammed out "Even Flow," which found guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard trading tasty licks worthy of Chickenfoot as Vedder stood aside, smoking a cigarette and swigging from a bottle of wine. (Always the Romantic poet, our boy.)
For the most part, though, this was as focused and propulsive a set as I've seen Pearl Jam play in the last two decades. And like all true classic-rock pros, Vedder & Co. gave every evidence that they're ready to keep rolling for 20 years more.

Pearl Jam Pumped pleases public

It was a reverent, but raucous crowd that jammed the Molson Amphitheatre Friday night to worship at the church of Pearl Jam.
Tickets to see the group, which sold out the Air Canada Centre with back to back gigs in 2006, were such a hot property that scalpers offered the $39.50 lawn seats for $400 just before the show.
The two encore love in started 15 minutes late and would break the 11 p.m. curfew to give meeter a chance to get through the CNE exacerbated Lakeshore Rd. gridlock.
But that meant some fans missed a novel treat: the band opening for themselves.
With the Pharmacists frontman Ted Leo stuck at the border passport issues, resultedly the Seattle alt rockers decided to help out with a six song acoustic set.
Alone on guitar, a seated Eddie Vedder captivated with Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain" and "The Needle and the Damage Done," demonstrating the versatility he would later not so submissively note "He can play acoustic. He can play electric. He can f--ing sing."
Guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard also launched in with solo stints before the Pharmacists had their turn with McCready and Vedder.
It was a fitting prelude by the seasoned quintet that, nearly 20 years in, still hustled like eager-to please rookies with a high energy, 27 song headlining set despite a locked in fan base that's aging along with them.
Against a simple, painted mural of elephantine waves, the first tune "Of the Girl" found Vedder in fierce form maniacal laugh, booming sincerity oozing vocals. They followed with "Corduroy" and "Severed Hand," allowing McCready to show off scorching, blues drenched solos. Buoyed by the steadiness of bassist Jeff Ament and relentless drummer Matt Cameron, the band cohesively moved through another moods and tempos. It was all the more awful given the exhaustive song list that changes from city to city (a must, given the fans that follow them around). New songs "The Fixer" and "Got Some" from ninth album Backspacer, which cancle next month, went over well, but it was the familiar that stoked the crowd.
As each song was introduced, people many of them immigrant high fived and hugged. I'd never seen so much screaming man love outside of a sporting event.
Vedder, 44, was evenly outgoing, jumping around, hanging off the mic stand, swilling red wine from the bottle, playing the guitar on top of his head, smiling and pointing at people in the audience, smoking cigarettes and reaching into the crowd to shake hands, though he did take a serious moment.
"Must be interesting to look at the country below you ... like watching a dog chasing its tail," remarked Vedder, weighing in on the current U.S. health care debate as an introduction to "Unemployable."

Acclaimed rock photographer Danny Clinch is helping Pearl Jam tell the story behind their ninth album Backspacer in a 10 minute making of video that was currently posted on MySpace Music. In addition to interviews with Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard and Co., the short article extended fragments of songs like first single "The Fixer" and "Got Some," which the band entry on The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien. The clip also provides fans with a first listen to Backspacer song "Just Breathe."

"It was all based on the brand new idea to us of ‘Let’s write the songs before we record them,’" Vedder says of Backspacer, which is the shortest Pearl Jam album yet but also "tight and concise," according to guitarist Mike McCready. "I don’t think there’s a record out there that has good lyrics," adds Ament. "To be confidential, it makes me feel actually proud to be up here providing some sort of background for that." Vedder goes on to say Backspacer features some of McCready’s good guitar solos.

Pearl Jam are presently touring Europe, where the band is playing among the most eclectic set lists of their career. To some people who recall Seattle's early 90s awoke scene, it will always be Nirvana v Pearl Jam, and that's a super commiseration. A band anteriored by a breaker dude who smokes so much pot he recently installed a fireman's pole in his home so he can get to his studio before he forgets anything - c'mon, these are now pretty fun friends. Never was this more apparent than on the band's new one, Backspacer. Less downfall in big shorts, more sharp new wavey compositions, the group look to be reconnecting with their past in an greatly advantageous way. This doesn't mean PJ are total dreamer though. Still adept of an affectional ballad, Eddie Vedder and company have found a way to refreash their game while quality fortysomething balladry, the better to get up there in the pantheon with Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young.

Billboard reported in December 2008 that Pearl Jam is presently working on its ninth studio album, building on instrumental and demo tracks written during 2008. When giving an in-depth look at the new album, Vedder stated, "

The band has tentative plans to embark on a small tour later this year around the release of the album. In August 2009, Pearl Jam will be starring the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival, go after by four shows in Europe and two in North America. "Black" is a song by the American rock band Pearl Jam. The song is the fifth track on the band's debut album, Ten (1991). Featuring lyrics written by vocalist Eddie Vedder and music written by guitarist Stone Gossard, "Black" is a soliloquy by a broken-hearted man, who is remembering his absent lover.

"Black" was first performed live at the band's October 22, 1990 concert in Seattle, Washington at the Off Ramp Café.[7] Pearl Jam performed the song for its appearance on MTV Unplugged in 1992. Live performances of "Black" can be found on the "Dissident"/Live in Atlanta box set, the live album Live on Two Legs, various official bootlegs, the live album Live at Benaroya Hall, the Live at the Gorge 05/06 box set, and the Drop in the Park LP included in the Super Deluxe edition of the Ten reissue. Performances of the song are also included on the DVD Live at the Garden and the MTV Unplugged DVD included in the Ten reissue.

Pearl Jam Announce August Shows

Pearl Jam announced today a handful of special performances in the United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands.
Concerts are scheduled to take place August 13th in Rotterdam, August 15th in Berlin, August 17th in Manchester and August 18th in London. The band anticipates a return to Europe for a full-scale tour in the months following the release of their next album, which is tentatively planned for this Fall.

Public tickets for these shows will go on-sale Friday, May 8th. Additional ticket information will be announced in local markets in the coming weeks.

Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band and the Beastie Boys will headline this year’s Austin City Limits festival, taking place in the Texas capital’s Zilker Park October 2-4th. The eclectic bill also includes current Rolling Stone cover stars Kings of Leon, Sonic Youth, Ben Harper and Relentless7, the Dead Weather, Arctic Monkeys and over 150 more acts from the world of rock, rap, folk and blues.

If a festival headlined by Pearl Jam, DMB and the Beasties sound familiar, there’s a good reason for it: The three bands will also be the marquee acts at San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival. For Pearl Jam, the ACL show is only the second announced date on their U.S. itinerary. Pearl Jam is an American rock band that formed in Seattle, Washington in 1990. Since its inception, the band's line-up has included Eddie Vedder (lead vocals, guitar), Jeff Ament (bass guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), and Mike McCready (lead guitar). The band's current drummer is Matt Cameron, formerly of Soundgarden, who has been with the band since 1998.

Formed after the demise of Ament and Gossard's previous band Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam broke into the mainstream with its debut album, Ten. One of the key bands of the grunge movement in the early 1990s, Pearl Jam was criticized early on — most notably by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain — as being a corporate cash-in on the alternative rock explosion. However, over the course of the band's career its members became noted for their refusal to adhere to traditional music industry practices, including refusing to make music videos and engaging in a much-publicized boycott of Ticketmaster. In 2006, Rolling Stone described the band as having "spent much of the past decade deliberately tearing apart their own fame."

Since its inception, the band has sold over thirty million records in the U.S.,and an estimated sixty million albums worldwide. Pearl Jam has outlasted many of its contemporaries from the alternative rock breakthrough of the early 1990s, and is considered one of the most influential bands of the decade.Allmusic calls Pearl Jam "the most popular American rock & roll band of the '90s."
