Pearl Jam's: 'Backspacer' is future Of CD’s

CORPUS CHRISTI — Now with the release of its new CD, “Backspacer,” Pearl Jam is blazing a new trail for releasing music. The group has partnered with Target to be the sole big box retailer selling the new CD. The band will sell “Backspacer” through a network of some 800 independent record stores, while also negotiating to make iTunes the exclusive digital seller of the CD.
Pearl Jam bassist Jeff Ament said the multi pronged release deal had been in the works since before the band’s 2006 self titled CD, which was released on J Records.
“The jury’s still a little bit out, but it looks like people who want the record are getting the record,” Ament said. “And we’re all sort of indie store guys and we used to go to our neighborhood record stores, and I think all of those people are super glad.”
