Alice in Chains, Death Cab, Pearl Jam and other NW bands are in the hunt for Grammys

Like the homecoming court and presidential election, the Grammys are more about popularity and politicking than merit. And spectacle! Because we'd rather ponder Lady Gaga's man-parts than, like, whether her music's any good.

Several artists with Northwest connections are nominated for major awards this year: Dave Matthews Band, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Death Cab for Cutie and Neko Case.
Who cares, right? Grammys are meaningless. Unless your favorite band wins one, of course, in which case said band's purpose is vindicated, signaling upgraded intelligence and taste in the entire human population and a brighter future for our children.

May the Recording Academy help us all.
Below are a few predictions for the 52nd annual Grammy Awards, which air at 8 p.m. Sunday on CBS. Final count, in our estimation: Locals three, bad guys four
